BC COVID-19 Research and Collaboration Symposium

Simon Fraser University, the University of British Columbia School of Population and Public Heath, the University of Northern British Columbia, the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research, the BC Academic Health Science Network and BC SUPPORT Unit have joined together to host a two-day research symposium. Researchers and stakeholders from health sciences, education, social sciences and humanities will take part in this symposium focused on the impacts of COVID-19 and its associated public health measures on populations, public health, health services and other sectors throughout BC.

The goals of this symposium are to:

  1. Share the broad range of research being conducted across BC on population and public health, health services, social sciences, education, and other impacts of COVID-19 to stimulate discussions around synergies and research gaps;
  2. Learn how this research can inform and support the BC Ministry of Health’s COVID-19 strategic priorities and the BC Strategic COVID-19 Research Framework; and
  3. Discuss strategies for minimizing patient burden and the efficient use of data and support platforms that are available to COVID-19 researchers in BC.

The online symposium will span two days, Tuesday and Wednesday, September 1-2, 2020, and will include keynote presentations and rapid-fire presentations from leading BC researchers working on COVID-19, spanning Global Health and the following four themes:

Epidemiology and Modeling

    • Communicating Public Health Measures
    • Organization, Politics and Governance of Response

2. Population Health Impact of Public Health Measures

    • Overall Population Impacts

    • Specific Patient Populations

3. Pandemic Impact on Health Services and the Workforce

    • COVID-19 Health Services

    • Long-Term Care
    • Health Workforce

4. Other Impacts and Unintended Consequences of Public Health Measures
